Haverhill Explosive Device Secured by Bomb Disposal Unit

HAVERHILL — State Police Bomb Squad technicians safely removed an explosive device in Haverhill, and nearby residents have been allowed to return to their homes, said Haverhill Police Chief Robert Pistone, Haverhill Fire Chief Robert O’Brien and State Fire Marshal Jon Davine.

At approximately 8:00 a.m., Haverhill Police were notified of a disturbing incident at 5 Rosebud Ave. The Haverhill Police Department and Haverhill Fire Department responded to the scene and based on their observations requested assistance from the State Police Fire and Explosion Investigative Unit attached to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Nearby residents were evacuated with caution while Bomb Squad technicians assessed potential threats. Based on assessments using robotic platforms and other tools, technicians determined the device posed a significant hazard and could not be safely transported. To ensure safety, they conducted a controlled detonation and removed additional explosive material found at the scene.

The resident of the Rosebud Avenue home was found in a Freightliner on Route 495 in Wrentham late this morning. State police initiated a motor vehicle inspection and took the man into custody. Route 495 was closed while the Freightliner was cleaned for hazards and reopened after the vehicle was cleaned. The resident, a man in his 60s, was transported to an area hospital. Haverhill police will file criminal charges in connection with the device.

Residents of the surrounding areas were allowed to return to their homes. Rosebud Avenue will remain closed for a short time while emergency vehicles clear the scene.
