I’ve written about Ubiquiti’s fantastic camera products in a few posts over the past few months, but cameras are nothing without a backend system to manage and monitor them. Ubiquiti recently released UniFi Protect v4.0 with a redesigned NVR Core Engine.

About Apple@Work: Bradley Chambers managed a corporate IT network from 2009 to 2021. With his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, mobile device management, enterprise-class Wi-Fi, thousands of Macs, and thousands of iPads, Bradley will share how Apple IT Managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple can improve its products for IT departments.

What’s new in UniFi Protect 4.0?

The latest version of UniFi Protect, version 4.0, brings many new features and improvements aimed at improving user experience and system performance. Here’s a quick overview of what’s new:

New NVR core engine

UniFi Protect 4.0 adds Enhanced Encoding to improve live streaming and recording performance with G4, G5, and AI cameras. Camera recording resolution can now be reduced to 2K or HD for each camera to free up disk space on the NVR.

Improved user interface

UniFi Protect 4.0 introduces an improved and more intuitive user interface for camera monitoring. The updated design makes navigation easier and quicker to access key features, providing users with easier management of their camera systems. It also adds improved bulk video export from multiple cameras to a local device, Google Drive, or Microsoft OneDrive.

Improved motion detection

This release includes significant improvements to the motion detection algorithms. Increased accuracy and reduced false alarms mean users can rely on more precise alerts and better safety monitoring.

Advanced playback controls

Browsing through your recordings is now more efficient with new advanced playback controls. Users can quickly navigate through recorded video, making it easier to find and analyze specific events.

Configurable notifications

The latest update allows for more personalization of notification settings. Users can tailor alerts to their specific needs, ensuring that they are notified only of the most important events, thereby reducing notification overload.

Performance improvements

Behind the scenes, numerous performance improvements have been made. These improvements ensure a more stable and responsive system, providing users with a reliable and efficient security solution.

End

Would I want 100% of my NVR data to be fed directly from a cloud platform like AWS? Sure, but the costs are staggering when you have dozens of cameras. In my opinion, Unifi Protect 4.0 is currently the best overall value in NVR and camera technology – especially for small to mid-sized deployments. As far as a free upgrade, Unifi Protect 4.0 is an incredible upgrade and sets the stage for a great path ahead for customers. If you can get a three-camera set for $500 with no ongoing fees, it’s hard to recommend anything else to start with.
