Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Saturday said that the Union Territory offers huge opportunities for start-ups in various sectors and the government is trying to support young entrepreneurs.
“I believe that startups are a powerful instrument for connecting universities with industry. The startups have also been able to achieve two important goals – employment generation and profit generation,” Sinha said at a national seminar on “The Role of Academia Driven Startups in the Growing Economy of J&K UT (RASE 2024)” organized at NIT Srinagar.
The Lt Governor encouraged the students to set action-oriented goals to make their entrepreneurial dreams come true and contribute to the country’s socio-economic transformation and growth.
“My message to the upcoming start-up entrepreneurs is to focus on ‘problem first’ and not ‘product first’ so that your ideas can accelerate the process of ‘Viksit Bharat’ and also stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit among the young students,” he said.
The Lt Governor also highlighted the potential of academia-based startups that can transform the economy of Jammu and Kashmir by fostering a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in educational institutions.
He mentioned the administration’s key initiatives such as the J&K Startup Policy and the Holistic Agricultural Development Program (HADP) that have the potential to transform the startups and entrepreneurship ecosystem, especially in the rural areas of the Union Territory.
There are huge opportunities for startups in tourism, healthcare, logistics, handloom, handicrafts, horticulture, agriculture and related sectors. “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we are committed to providing necessary support and guidance to young entrepreneurs in both technology and non-technology sectors,” he said.
He further said that the national level seminar will encourage universities/colleges to invest in the future and develop talent for effective innovation.
The Lieutenant Governor also stressed the need to provide quality technical and vocational education and training to future entrepreneurs.
Two other important goals of startups are to develop and transfer new technologies for social transformation and create a huge talent pool in line with industry needs, Sinha added.
He called for greater collaboration between academia, industry and policy makers to create a vibrant entrepreneurship ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir.
The two-day national seminar is being organised by the National Institute of Technology, Srinagar in collaboration with the Department of Holistic Education, Central University of Kashmir, ICAR CITH, Department of Science and Technology and SKUAST-Kashmir.
