June 29, 2024

The Fourth of July holiday is fast approaching, so now is a good time to familiarize yourself with the City of Lee’s Summit’s fireworks regulations.

Using Fireworks for the 4th of July
Fireworks may only be fired on July 2 and 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., and on July 4 from 10:00 a.m. to midnight. Each household must have a fireworks permit before firing fireworks within city limits.

Permission to use fireworks
A free fireworks permit must be obtained each year. Permits are available from any licensed fireworks retailer in the City of Lee’s Summit or at City Hall during normal business hours. Permits are valid for the address listed on the permit where the fireworks will be discharged.

Permission to sell fireworks
For the retail sale of fireworks, a fireworks permit is required and the application is only accepted by the Development Department in the spring of each year for a limited time. Sellers are asked to contact the Development Department.

Permission for a fireworks display
A fireworks display permit is required for public or private aerial (1.3 G) fireworks displays conducted by commercial or private pyrotechnic operators in accordance with NFPA Standard 1123 or 1126 for immediate area fireworks displays or fireworks displays intended for for consumers on dates other than those permitted in July. Exhibition applications must be submitted at least 14 days prior to the exhibition for review and approval.

To report a fireworks violation, call the Lee’s Summit Police Hotline at 816-969-7390, option 7 for dispatch.

Only call 911 for emergencies!

Please do not report fireworks violations via social media, online comments or email as these outlets are not monitored 24 hours a day.
