E-com scammers have not yet returned Tk 1.25b to customers

Dozens of fraudulent e-commerce companies such as Eorange Shop have yet to return an estimated 1.25 billion taka to their gullible customers.

Sources said the refund process was moving at a snail’s pace.

According to data from the National Directorate for Consumer Rights Protection, the total amount of funds deposited by customers on 34 online shopping platforms amounted to a staggering amount of 5.34 billion taka.

Commerce ministry sources said that as of June 13, 2024, around 15 companies have refunded over Tk 4.87 billion to 67,070 customers.

A dozen or so companies in difficulty have not yet started refunding money to their customers.

The sites include: Needs, Twenty-four TKT, Eorange, Wikum, Akash Neel, Priya Shop, Aladdin’s Lamp, Amar Bazaar, Astha Pratik, Home Shop.com, Safe and Infinity Marketing Limited.

According to the source, refunds are currently going at a slow pace. It should be faster to return funds to affected customers.

The returns program started in January 2022.

The ministry expressed hope that the remaining amount would be returned to affected customers within the next few months.

Nagad, bKash, Software Shop (SSL), ShurjoMukhi, Foster Corporation and United Commercial Bank act as payment gateways and service providers.
