Iraq signs investment license with TotalEnergys for 1,000 MW solar power plant in Basra

Shafaq News/ National Investment Commission Chairman Haider Mohammed Makia on Sunday signed an investment license for a solar power plant project with French company TotalEnergys.

The project, located in Basra province, will have a capacity of 1,000 megawatts.

During the contract signing ceremony, Makia emphasized that this project represents the first investment opportunity in a solar power plant, being part of the government’s plan to diversify renewable energy sources.

He noted that this project will significantly contribute to powering the national electricity grid by increasing the power obtained from solar energy.

“This project is a key step in our strategy to integrate renewable energy sources into Iraq’s energy mix,” Makia said, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives for improving the country’s energy infrastructure and its sustainable development.

In April, TotalEnergies announced that it had signed land and grid connection agreements for the solar plant. The project involves building a 180-km transmission line to connect the plant to Basra’s power distribution network and installing a secondary distribution station.

TotalEnergys said: “The plant will be one of the largest clean solar power plants in the Middle East and North Africa region.”

The plant is expected to provide clean electricity to more than 350,000 homes, with the project scheduled for completion in 2025 in four stages.
