“More records were broken in March.”

Fortunately, renewable energy sources are increasingly overtaking natural gas to become the largest source of electricity in the United States.

As Electrek reported, the mix of solar, wind, hydro, biomass, and geothermal generation accounted for nearly 25% of all electricity produced in the first quarter of 2024 – a share that rose to nearly 30% in March. Meanwhile, natural gas production has been declining, falling below 40% in March.

The updated statistics come from the Electric Power Monthly Energy Information Administration report, which provides data on where our electricity comes from. The report not only shows progress in transforming our energy economy to cleaner, greener means of production, but also gives us hope for the future.

“More records were broken in March as wind and solar generated more electricity than nuclear or coal, and solar was on the brink of overtaking hydropower,” said Sun Day Campaign Executive Director Ken Bossong, according to Electrek. “The renewable mix provided nearly 30% of U.S. electricity production in March and is likely to exceed that level in the coming months.”

This news is a win for Americans because renewable energy will make energy more accessible and affordable for everyone. As we expand the use and improve the technology of solar, wind and other renewable energy sources, the cost of producing them decreases, encouraging companies to invest in clean energy to save money and reach a broader customer base.

This news is good for the planet by providing people with the electricity they need without burning polluting fuels and further contributing to Earth’s overheating. In America and beyond, advances like this are changing the future of global electricity and ensuring people have energy where they need it.

“I just see humanity looking back on this change and realizing it wasn’t as difficult as we thought,” one reader commented on the Electrek article.

Another reader responded to this comment by writing, “Getting renewables to around 75% is very doable, and hard economics will eventually make it happen.”
