Makinde ends darkness in Oyo community with the installation of a hybrid solar mini-grid

The Oyo State Government, in collaboration with private investors, has illuminated the Inukan Local Government Development Area with a hybrid solar mini grid, thus ending the centuries-long agony of residents of living in the dark at night.

The lack of electricity hindered the socio-economic development of the commune, making life difficult for residents until the construction of a hybrid photovoltaic mini-grid initiated by the State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde and a team of renowned experts in the field of renewable energy began.

The residents of the community used candles, lanterns and, more importantly, generators as power sources. The high cost of fuel and maintaining generators made it difficult for residents to access electricity.

The project, soon to be commissioned by the governor, is a solar-diesel combination that provides a reliable source of power. It includes a 100 kW solar array, a 100 kVA diesel generator and a community-wide distribution conduit.

Seun Ashamu, the state commissioner for energy, said the mini-grid, which has also been located in some other communities, is a combination of state-funded and private sector covering Otefon, Atiba; Agbaruru; Iwajowa; Elekonkan, Iwajowa; Adafila; Orire; Abuja Leather; Itwesiwaju; Olokoto; Orire; Oko-Ile, Orire; RCDC, Afijio; Ahoro Dada, Orire; Sanni Sala Saki West; Orita Orisunmibare, Saki West; Arget, Itesiwaju; Igbori, Orire
Alaropo Nla, Orire; Ayegun Wasimi, Iwajowa; Overate, Saki West Kofeogun, Iwajowa; Iregba Oja, Surulere and Budo Are, Itesiwaju

The residents of Ajia town are excited about the hybrid solar mini-grid as they now have access to electricity which has improved their lives. According to Ashamu, “The construction of the hybrid solar mini-grid in Ajia town is a significant milestone in Oyo State’s renewable energy as the project has shown that renewable energy can be a reliable source of energy even in rural communities.”
