Government appoints Surjit S. Bhalla as IMF Executive Director for India

The government has appointed economist Surjit Bhalla as executive director of the International Monetary Fund for a period of three years. The position remained vacant following the death of Dr Subir Gokarna in July.

“The Cabinet Committee on Appointments has approved the appointment of economist Dr Surjit S. Bhalla as Executive Director (India) of the International Monetary Fund for a period of three years from the date of assumption of office or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the statement said. Bhalla was previously a member of the prime minister’s economic advisory council but resigned earlier this year.

His appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
