The bomb squad carries out a controlled explosion after finding an explosive in the Don River

A controlled explosion took place in Sheffield after a historic explosive device was found.

South Yorkshire Police were called to Ball Street on Kelham Island today (June 30) following reports of an explosive device being found in the River Don.




Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists arrived on scene and transported the explosive device to a safe location in the Parkwood Springs neighborhood where the explosion occurred.

A cordon was established for security reasons, but has since been lifted.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said: “Bomb disposal experts from Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) carried out a controlled explosion in the Parkwood Springs area of ​​Sheffield this evening following the discovery of a historic explosive device.

“We were called to Ball Street, Kelham Island today (June 30) to reports that a suspected explosive device had been found in the River Don.

“EOD also attended the scene before transporting the device to a safe location and conducting a controlled explosion, with a cordon established for public safety. This cordon has now been lifted and we would like to thank the public for their cooperation and understanding.”
