Nursing students committed to pursuing opportunities beyond the health care sector

Nursing students are challenged to explore opportunities beyond the traditional health care environment and pursue opportunities in other sectors of the economy.

The allegation was made during the inaugural Nightingale Summit themed “Beyond the Scrub” held on Saturday at the College of Nursing Sciences, Ogbomoso, Oyo.

Event organizer and College of Nursing Sciences final-year nursing student, Obafemi Arowosegbe, said the summit – which is expected to become an annual event – aims to empower and inspire nursing students and professionals to explore opportunities beyond the healthcare community of nursing and seek ways to revolutionize the nursing profession.

Arowosegbe added that the event ─ which was attended by nursing students from the Faculty of Nursing Sciences, Bowen University, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) and the University of Ilorin ─ was also aimed at fostering innovation and collaboration among nursing students and professionals in the country and abroad.

“This summit will become a cornerstone in the nursing calendar, evolving each year to address new challenges and opportunities, creating a platform that inspires nursing students and nurses to explore opportunities and make a significant impact beyond the hospital setting,” he said.

The event was mainly attended by nurses including Dr. Zaccheus Opeyemi, Ojo Mojoyinola, Busari Imoleayo, Tobi Adewumi, Elizabeth Oshinaike, Kumi Sarah, George Onyinyechi and Omosebi Oluwasefunmi.

Speakers shared their insights on current issues including education, leadership, content creation, technology integration, community initiatives, social media optimization, networking and real estate.
In her lecture, Mojoyinola Ojo noted that leadership is about setting a vision and achieving shared goals with charisma and integrity.

Ojo stressed the importance of self-development and the ability to take responsibility for others, adding: “Leadership in nursing is not a rank but a responsibility.”

Dr Akingbade emphasized that the nursing profession can be challenging, but it must continually be viewed as a task that can lead to global opportunities, adding: “Challenges are the breakfast of champions.”

Akingbade also emphasized the need to realize the vision of transforming the nursing profession, opening up opportunities and enabling nurses to make a significant impact in the healthcare sector and beyond.

Some participants said the summit was a thought-provoking experience that challenged their assumptions and broadened their perspectives.

Others said they were inspired by the passion and expertise of the speakers and participants and appreciated the opportunity to connect with people who shared their interests and goals.

“The Nightingale Summit was a valuable and enriching experience that I would recommend to others. I look forward to applying the insights and connections I made at the event to create positive change and impact in my work,” said one attendee.
