Miti is finalizing supply chain mapping for six key sectors, says deputy minister

KUALA LUMPUR (July 1): The Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (Miti) is in the final stages of finalizing supply chain mapping for six major sectors, said Miti Deputy Minister Liew Chin Tong.

According to Liew, the six sectors include: pharmaceuticals, medical devices, electrical and electronics, automotive, food processing and personal protective equipment.

“These efforts are part of the ministry’s initiative to establish sustainable and resilient supply chains as outlined in one of the four missions of the New Industrial Master Plan 2030 (NIMP 2030), which focuses on protecting economic security and inclusiveness,” Liew said Dewan Rakyat on Monday during the oral response session.

He said NIMP 2030, launched by the government in September last year, adopts a mission-based approach with 21 strategies and 62 action plans spread across four missions. The ministry, acting as implementation coordinator, has identified 10 key action plans.

The four missions aim to increase economic complexity, support a digitally vibrant nation, achieve net zero emissions, and ensure economic security and social inclusion.

As part of the mission to increase economic complexity, Liew emphasized that the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS) was launched in May to develop the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem and attract foreign investment. Additionally, in August 2023, the government launched the Chemicals Industry Action Plan to support the specialty chemicals sub-sector.

In the context of the mission to foster a digitally dynamic nation, Liew said ongoing enhancements to the National Industry 4.0 Policy’s readiness assessment program – Industry4WRD – aim to create 3,000 smart factories by 2030.

“Miti is currently finalising the TechUp programme in partnership with SIRIM Bhd, the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and financial institutions to facilitate these efforts,” Liew added.

Regarding the mission to achieve net zero emissions, Liew said Miti is conducting a study on sector-specific decarbonization pathways, which is expected to be completed by November 2024. At the same time, a cross-ministry and agency effort is underway to advance carbon capture, utilization and storage ( CCUS) as a new economic resource.

Liew also noted that the CCUS bill is expected to be tabled in Parliament by the end of 2024 as a steering committee led by the Ministry of Economic Affairs is examining various aspects of developing the CCUS ecosystem.
