Sungrow and Atlas Renewable Energy sign cooperation agreement

Sungrow, the world’s leading supplier of photovoltaic inverters and energy storage systems, has signed an agreement with Atlas Renewable Energy, the largest and fastest growing independent renewable energy producer in Latin America, for the exclusive use of Sungrow’s liquid-cooled storage system, PowerTitan, for system design battery energy storage 200 MW/880 MWh (BESS) del Desierto. Once completed, this plant will significantly reduce supply constraints in northern Chile, increase regional energy reliability and contribute to achieving the goal of 100% clean energy by 2050.

Nestled in the Atacama Desert, the BESS del Desierto plant faces a unique challenge: abundant photovoltaic resources cannot be fully transported to the main energy consumption area 1,500 km away due to grid load constraints. Atlas Renewable Energy will build Chile’s largest large-scale stand-alone energy storage facility, which will capture excess solar energy during the day and seamlessly integrate it into the grid when load allows. This innovative approach will increase the flexibility and sustainability of regional energy consumption. Atlas forecasts that approximately 280 GWh of additional electricity will be fed into the grid annually, effectively easing restrictions in Chile.

The Atacama Desert offers harsh conditions, including heavy dust and extreme temperature fluctuations exceeding 30°C. To ensure the long-term stability of the BESS del Desierto, PowerTitan offers C5 corrosion resistance, IP65 protection against wind and sand, intelligent liquid cooling, and an intelligent O&M system, ensuring optimal temperature control and stability.

Moreover, Sungrow uses advanced grid-forming technology to provide millisecond-level active and reactive power response, frequency modulation, voltage regulation and harmonic suppression. This helps stabilize power grids, actively increasing local grid resilience, addressing the challenges of long-distance and complex grid distribution, and providing Chile with a more stable power supply.

“BESS del Desierto is the first Atlas energy storage station and a key milestone in our entry into the energy storage sector. It represents a significant strategic effort to efficiently use solar energy resources to increase energy reliability in Latin America. We are excited to take this step forward with our long-time partner, Sungrow,” said Patrick Valentin, head of strategic sourcing at Atlas Renewable Energy.
