Michigan is helping workers transition to clean energy

To support the transition to clean energy, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity created an office to help workers transition from fossil fuel jobs to renewable energy jobs.

Kyle Davidson reports Progress in Michigan.

IN short:

  • Michigan is moving toward 100% clean energy by shifting auto production from gas-powered vehicles to electric vehicles.
  • A new federally funded Office of Community and Workforce Economic Transformation is helping manufacturers and workers adapt to jobs in the renewable energy sector.
  • Collaboration with federal programs improves employee training and resource allocation for economic transformation.

Key quote:

“We know we have a clean energy transition that will take years and decades to fully realize. So we can create opportunities to identify communities and workers who are most vulnerable to change, and then provide opportunities for businesses in those communities so they never face economic harm.”

—Jonathan Smith, senior deputy director of the Michigan Department of Jobs and Economic Opportunity

Why is it important:

A clean energy transition can prevent economic damage to communities dependent on fossil fuels by creating new jobs and training opportunities. Proactive strategies help ensure that workers and businesses are able to adapt to and benefit from these changes.
