ClearWELL welcomes distinguished Professor Heriot-Watt to its Board of Directors.

Energy scale management specialist ClearWELL Energy has announced the appointment of Professor Eric Mackay from Heriot-Watt University as a non-executive director. The appointment will strengthen ClearWELL’s management team as the company continues to expand its research, development and commercial activities.

Professor Eric Mackay has worked at the GeoEnergy Engineering Institute at Heriot-Watt University, teaching a number of MSc and PhD courses related to petroleum engineering since 1990. Eric has authored over 200 publications on inorganic scale management and regularly consults to industry. He is the Chair of CCUS and Reactive Flow Simulation at Energi Simulation, a Canadian not-for-profit company that works with universities, governments and industry to deliver world-leading research on the decarbonization of power generation. He is Principal Investigator on the Flow Assurance and Scale Team Joint Industry Project, delivering industry-funded, collaborative research into the management of scale in oil reservoirs, through Heriot-Watt University and the University of Leeds.

Eric has been a member of the technical committee for the SPE International Symposium on Oilfield Scale since 2003, gave the event’s opening presentation in 2004, and chaired the committee in 2006. He was named an SPE Distinguished Lecturer in Scale Management in 2007–2008 and in 2017. received the SPE North Sea Region Production and Operations Award. He also chaired the technical committee for the 2021 SPE Oilfield Chemistry Conference in Houston.

On his decision to join ClearWELL, Eric said: “We have known for some time that electromagnetic devices can affect the formation and adhesion of inorganic scales, but the exact mechanisms by which they work are not well understood. ClearWELL’s pioneering work in this area has contributed to our understanding of where and where not to use a signaling device, and how to tailor it to individual well configurations. This advancement in scientific knowledge has led to high-value industrial applications such as protecting electric submersible pumps, preventing halite deposition in gas wells and ensuring flow in geothermal energy systems. This is an exciting and rapidly evolving technology that has the added benefit of reducing well interventions and improving the carbon footprint of scale management in thousands of wells worldwide. I am delighted to play a part in this promotion!”

Keith Coutts, CEO of ClearWELL, said: “We are thrilled to welcome Eric to our board. His world-renowned scientific expertise is a perfect fit for our innovative work in electromagnetic scale control, flow assurance and asset integrity, and his consultation on our R&D program will help us deliver even greater value to the global energy industry.

Prof. Eric Mackay joins Keith Coutts, Stuart Ferguson, Neil McGuinness and Martin Clark as the fifth member of ClearWELL’s board of directors.
