Department asked about leniency for horse sector compared to cattle

The Oireachtas Agriculture Committee has pressed Department of Agriculture officials to explain why the horse sector has not introduced a rigorous traceability system in the beef industry.

The hearing took place following the broadcast of an RTÉ documentary which examined the abuse of horses at the Shannonside Foods abattoir in Straffan, Co Kildare.
