Encourage sustainable development, Samsung reduces electronic waste and increases the use of renewable energy

JAKARTA Samsung, a South Korean electronics company, released its 2024 Sustainability Report on June 28. The report noted Samsung’s various efforts to achieve net zero emissions. Under the New Environmental Strategy created in 2022, Samsung will achieve net zero Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2050. Scope 1 is the company’s internal emissions, while Scope 2 comes from power plants. In line with this strategy, Samsung’s Device eXperience (DX) business converted 93.4 percent of renewable energy at the end of last year. The company converted energy from manufacturing facilities in the US, Europe, Korea, China, Brazil, India and Vietnam. DX has also expanded its electronic waste (e-waste) recovery and recycling program to over 70 countries. In addition to DX, Samsung’s Device Solutions (DS) division has also taken action towards sustainability.

The division installed a new process gas processing plant that uses a catalytic generator system and expanded the use of a heat recovery system from liquefied natural gas (LNG). These two trials were undertaken last year. DS, like DX, is also expanding its use of renewable energy. The division signed an agreement to purchase a 60-megawatt solar power plant in South Korea to provide renewable energy. With the support of DS and DX, Samsung managed to see its emissions at Scope fall by 1 and 2 percent to 11.6 percent by the end of last year. Samsung says this is a much better percentage than in 2022.
