MANILA, Philippines — The Regional Tripartite Wage and Productivity Board (RTWPB) has approved a P35 daily wage hike for private sector workers in Metro Manila.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said the RTWPB order will take effect 15 days from its publication or July 17.

The increase will increase the daily minimum wage in the region from PHP 610 to PHP 645 for the non-agricultural sector and from PHP 573 to PHP 608 for the agricultural sector, services and commercial establishments employing 15 or fewer workers, and manufacturing establishments regularly employing fewer than 10 workers.

According to the DOLE, the new wage rates, which translate to an increase of about 5.7% over the prevailing daily minimum wage rates in the region, “remain above the latest regional poverty line for a family of five.”

He added that the salary hike results in a comparable 5 percent increase in salary-related benefits, which include the 13th salary, seniority incentive leave (SIL), and social security benefits such as SSS, PhilHealth and Pag-IBIG.

“The wage ordinance is expected to directly benefit approximately 988,243 minimum wage earners in the NCR (National Capital Region),” the DOLE said.

“Around 1.7 million salaried workers earning above the minimum wage may also indirectly benefit from upward adjustments at the firm level resulting from the correction of wage distortions,” it added.

Meanwhile, under the National Wages and Productivity Commission’s Omnibus Rules on Minimum Wage Fixing, retail or service establishments employing fewer than 10 workers and businesses affected by natural or man-made disasters can apply for an exemption from the RTWPB’s wage hike order.

On the other hand, Barangay Micro Business Enterprises are not covered by minimum wage regulations under Republic Act No. 9178.
