BP joins JDA to explore green hydrogen development in Egypt

Under the JDA, bp will act as lead developer and operator of the project on behalf of the consortium. The partners are combining their gH2 projects in Egypt and will also explore the potential for a single, large, multi-phase project to develop gH2 and its derivatives, with a focus on export.

The newly formed consortium has signed a Framework Work Agreement (FWA) with the Government of Egypt to commence carrying out a series of studies and activities to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of the project.

The FWA was signed on the sidelines of the Egypt-EU investment conference by: Nader Zaki, bp regional president for the Middle East and North Africa; Karim Hefzy, Chief Operating Officer of Hassan Allam Utilities; Andreas Bieringer, Director of Business Development and Commercial Green Hydrogen at Masdar; Karim Hafzi, Chief Operating Officer of Hassan Allam Utilities; and Mohamed Mansour, president of Infinity Power.

“We are pleased that the signing coincides with Egypt’s 60th anniversary, which clearly reflects our continued commitment to the country. The partners’ diverse experience in energy projects provides an excellent opportunity for regional cooperation and access to global markets, fundamentally supporting Egypt’s energy transformation efforts,” said Nader Zaki, bp Regional President for the Middle East and North Africa.

Mohammad Abdelqader El Ramahi, Director of Green Hydrogen at Masdar, added: “We welcome the addition of bp to the consortium, building on the well-established existing relationships between our companies and supporting Masdar’s ambition to drive the development of green hydrogen globally.

“We already have plans to develop green hydrogen projects in Egypt, and this agreement reinforces Masdar’s and the UAE’s commitment to Egypt realizing its vast clean energy and green hydrogen potential, together with our African renewable energy leader IPH.”
