Chicago Cubs and Invenergy announce new multi-year partnership

Partnership including reactivation of community solar projects and on-field signage

The Chicago Cubs and Invenergy today announced a new multi-year partnership that will make the Chicago-based global developer, owner and operator of clean energy solutions the “Official Solar Energy Provider” of the Cubs and Wrigley Field, a first for the club.

“We are proud to welcome Chicago-based Invenergy to the Cubs family as our new solar energy provider,” said Tom Ricketts, Cubs executive chairman. “Being a good neighbor is important to us, and this partnership with Invenergy reinforces that commitment by helping to bring clean energy to the community through solar projects. It also supports our overall efforts towards greater energy efficiency and sustainability.”

Through this partnership, the Cubs will become an “anchor tenant” for several community solar projects developed by Invenergy Reactivate, which develops, owns and operates distributed solar and storage projects. Community solar allows subscribers to enjoy the financial benefits of clean energy without owning real estate or paying the upfront costs of solar. For renters, low- and moderate-income households and many local businesses, community solar is one of the few options without the upfront costs of saving money on their electric bills.

“Invenergy has called Chicago home for over 20 years and we are proud to partner with the Chicago Cubs on this transformational partnership,” said Invenergy founder and CEO Michael Polsky. “As a leading leader in clean energy solutions, Invenergy is currently expanding our Chicago headquarters and employees around the world to meet the increased demand for cleaner, more reliable and affordable energy. It is important to see iconic brands like the Chicago Cubs commit to being an active player in the clean energy transition and powering Wrigley Field with community solar in the coming seasons.”

The Reactivate community solar projects aim to eventually generate enough renewable energy to help offset energy use at Wrigley Field and make renewable energy available to select Cubs Charities Diamond Project beneficiaries. More information about the community solar projects and their impact will be announced at a later date. Fans will also notice new Invenergy signage on the field to the left of the center field entrance doors.

“Reactivate is proud to partner with the Chicago Cubs on community solar to advance a just and equitable energy transition,” said Reactivate CEO Utopia Hill. “These projects are expected to deliver significant energy savings and meaningful, measurable benefits to the Chicago community—particularly low- and moderate-income households.”
