The Kilkenny TD rules himself out of running for the top government job

Kilkenny TD Malcolm Noonan has ruled himself out of the running to replace outgoing Green Party leader Eamon Ryan and has expressed his support for party colleague Roderic O’Gorman to take up the position.

Minister of State Noonan has delivered a number of legislative successes on the ecology agenda and secured increased funding in areas including biodiversity, nature and built heritage. First elected to Kilkenny City Council in 2004, he is the party’s longest-serving representative.

Meanwhile, local Green Party councillor Maria Dollard told the Kilkenny People that she was saddened by the news Minister of Environment, Climate, Communications and Transport, Eamon Ryan’s departure, describing him as a “skilled negotiator”.

“Eamon was an inspiring leader in the way he carried out his duties, showing a passion for climate action and a belief that Ireland can transform from laggards in the climate fight to leaders,” said Cllr Dollard.

“He is a gifted negotiator and a persuasive person, which he has demonstrated both at home and abroad. In the sometimes cynical world of politics, he has shown that honest, serious-minded politics is not only possible, but can be extremely effective,” she added.

Cutting childcare costs, extending parental leave and creating new bus routes are some of Mr Ryan’s achievements, and his resilience was praised by a Kilkenny councilor.

“He is a man full of passion and conviction who inspires and convinces people of the need for climate action. I believe that because he speaks so convincingly, he has also experienced horrific personal violence. He rose above the basic level of violence he suffered and did his job with dignity and sincerity, but he was always aware, he was also a father and a protector of the family.

“I am pleased that he will now have more time for his family, and they for him. He has led the Greens in government to achieve a long list of positive progress for the Irish people and that is something he can be proud of,” she said.

“I wish him, Victoria and Tommy all the best as he retires from politics. He left a legacy that will last for many years,” concluded Councilor Dollard.
