New CEO of Lost Gardens of Heligan

Lost Gardens of Heligan has appointed David Harland as its new CEO.

Harland has served as an independent advisor to the boards of the Heligan and Smit families for many years and will now naturally move into his new role as CEO of the group of companies that include Lost Gardens of Heligan, Shipwreck & Treasure Museum in Charlestown and Gillyflower Farm in Lostwithiel.

From 2013 to 2023, Harland held several leadership positions at Eden Project, including serving as Group CEO of Eden Project and the first CEO of Eden Project International.

He is also an independent governor on the board of Falmouth University and was recently appointed to the Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Climate Commission to help lead climate action.

“I’m excited to be working with the team,” he said. “I’ve always loved Heligan and have followed its journey for a long time – one of my first jobs as a student was working in the gardens back in 1995!

“This is an exciting time for us as we focus on the heart of what The Lost Gardens of Heligan and our associated businesses represent for our team, guests and followers.”

Speaking on behalf of the directors, Sir Tim Smit added: “We are delighted to welcome David Harland to join our team at Heligan and Smit Associates. Personally, I feel like a football manager who persuaded a great player to join our amazing team and help it develop. We are all excited and look forward to a long and successful future together.”

The tourist attraction’s management announced the appointment of Laura Chesterfield as managing director earlier this year. She will continue to lead and oversee the overall operations of The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
