In a separate study, the IMF warns that generative AI could not only worsen inequality within countries, but also between them. In its new AI Preparedness dataset, the IMF shows that wealthier countries are better prepared to reap the benefits of AI.

Most low- and middle-income countries have a smaller share of high-skill jobs than advanced economies. While this means there are likely to be fewer displaced workers in these countries, it also suggests that many of these countries lack the skilled workforce needed to harness the benefits of AI.

In short, generative AI has the potential to widen the productivity gap between high-income countries on the one hand and low- and middle-income countries on the other.
