China stops collecting data on wasted energy

China has reportedly stopped publishing data on how much wind and solar power it wastes as the country’s power grid struggles to adapt to fluctuating energy sources. China has a history of “quietly withholding” negative reports, Bloomberg wrote, and in its latest monthly update, the National Energy Administration did not include how much renewable energy is left untapped. Despite being a world leader in solar and wind power, China’s grid lacks sufficient storage capacity, meaning some regions have a surplus of untapped green energy during peak hours. The country’s energy regulator is considering ways to reduce grid strain, such as lowering power prices during periods of high supply but low demand.
