France prepares antitrust case against Nvidia

Nvidia could be on the cusp of a serious challenge to its dominant position in the AI market, with France reportedly close to filing antitrust charges.

Nvidia is not only a leading GPU manufacturer, but also a company that virtually the entire tech industry relies on to power its AI models. The company’s position has helped it become the most valuable company in the world, surpassing both Apple and Microsoft.

According to Reuters AgencyBut that success has come with new regulatory scrutiny, as France prepares to bring antitrust charges. The report follows a raid by the country’s competition watchdog on Nvidia’s offices last September.

The French regulator reported last week that it had issued a report highlighting a number of concerns about the artificial intelligence (AI) industry in general, including the dominance of Nvidia’s CUDA technology, as well as Nvidia’s investments in AI cloud service providers.

Although the European Commission has launched a preliminary investigation into Nvidia, it appears that the Commission will likely wait for the conclusion of the French case before expanding its investigation.
