Atishi orders Delhi education secretary to withdraw order to transfer teachers, ET Education

Delhi Education Minister Atishi

New Delhi, Delhi Education Minister Atishi has directed the education secretary to immediately withdraw the recent mandatory transfer orders issued to teachers who were working in the same school for more than 10 years, a statement said on Monday. According to an official statement, the directive comes after the Directorate of Education (DoE) issued mandatory transfer orders without the minister’s consent, which led to an outcry from the teaching community. Teachers have expressed widespread anger and frustration over the DoE’s decision. The delegation met Atishi on Monday to submit a memorandum of their grievances.

In response, Atishi highlighted the “detrimental impact” such transfers can have on the unique teacher-student relationships built on years of trust.

She stressed the importance of maintaining a stable educational environment, noting that administrative decisions should not undermine teacher morale, the statement said.

“There is a unique relationship between a teacher and a student that is based on years of trust; in such a situation, transfer orders like this are detrimental to the education system,” she said.

Atishi reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening the education system, emphasizing that teachers are the backbone of any school system.

“We have been working tirelessly to strengthen the education system in Delhi. Teachers are the most important part of any school system and the Delhi government’s efforts are to continuously work towards increasing the capacity and confidence of teachers and not do anything that would hurt their dignity,” she added.

In her directive to the Education Minister, Atishi stressed that no teacher should be transferred solely on the basis of seniority in a particular school.

She also directed that no future decisions regarding the morale or working conditions of teachers in Delhi government schools be taken without her express consent. She further asked for an action taken report to be submitted within the next seven days, it added.
