Apple May Soon Launch Google’s Gemini: Report

Apple’s latest move to further its AI ambitions appears to be to bring Google’s Gemini AI chatbot into the ecosystem, according to media reports. The iPhone maker is reportedly pursuing a deal with Google on the subject, which is expected to be formalized this fall.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple is in talks with Google to integrate its Gemini AI chatbot into its devices, giving users an alternative to ChatGPT. And while the initial focus was on ChatGPT, Apple has consistently hinted at a more inclusive approach. Apple’s head of software engineering, Craig Federighi, previously confirmed plans to include additional chatbots, giving users the flexibility to choose the one that best suits their specific needs and pick the tool best suited for the task at hand.

To talk more about Google Gemini AI, it is the company’s answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and was developed by Google AI research labs DeepMind and Google Research. Like other generative AI chatbots, it can generate text, images, audio, videos, and code from text and/or images or voice messages. As of May 2024, over 2 billion users have used Gemini, and over 1.5 million developers use Gemini APIs. With access to both ChatGPT and Gemini, Apple users will have a wider range of AI capabilities at their fingertips. With a wider range of AI capabilities at their disposal, users could potentially streamline their workflows and increase productivity. Gemini’s creative writing assistance can speed up content creation, while ChatGPT can help with research and data analysis.

“As for an Apple deal with Google or Anthropic, I expect at least the former to be announced around the time Apple Intelligence launches in the fall,” Gurman said.

The development comes as Apple Intelligence — the company’s latest AI offering, which was unveiled at this year’s Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) — is set to be integrated into upcoming iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia updates. It uses Apple’s proprietary on-device and online language models to perform a variety of tasks, including answering questions, summarizing text, and generating images. Apple Intelligence is set to be integrated into the Apple ecosystem, extending the functionality of devices and apps. The features will initially be available in English (U.S.) and will be compatible with iPhone 15 Pro, iPad, and Mac models equipped with the M1 chip or later. Apple plans to expand language support over time, ensuring that a wider audience can take advantage of these advanced capabilities.
