Maharashtra college bans wearing jeans, T-shirts, jerseys on campus, issues notice

A college in Maharashtra has sparked controversy by banning jeans on campus.

An official note from Acharya Marathe College in Chembur has stated that students wearing jeans will not be allowed to enter the college premises.

The announcement also stated that male students should come to college in formal attire.

Students were allowed to wear ethnic or Western clothing. However, as stated in the announcement, they were not allowed to wear clothing that revealed their religion.

“Students may wear half shirts or full shirts and trousers. Girls may wear any Indian or Western attire. Students are not allowed to wear any clothes that reveal religion or show cultural differences,” the notice reads.

“Nakab, Hizab, Burkha, Stole, Cap, Badge etc. must be removed while entering the common areas on the ground floor and only then they are allowed to move around the college campus. Torn jeans, T-shirts, revealing dresses and shirts are not allowed,” it said.

Meanwhile, some students who did not show up at the university on the day the notice was issued were not allowed to enter the university premises the next day due to the new dress code.

According to details, at least nine female students of the college also approached the Mumbai High Court seeking an appeal against the college’s decision.

However, their petition was rejected.
