Henkel Adhesive Technologies achieves 100% renewable energy for production plants in MEA region

Henkel Adhesive Technologies, a global leader in adhesives, sealants and functional coatings, announced a major sustainability milestone: all of its production plants in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region now operate on 100% renewable electricity.

Eight Henkel MEA Adhesive Technologies production plants, spread across six countries, have transitioned to renewable electricity sources, effectively eliminating carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from their electricity consumption, known as Scope 2 emissions. This transition includes a mix of on-site solar installations and off-site renewable sources such as hydropower and wind power. Specific initiatives include renewable electricity from on-site solar photovoltaic (PV) and hydroelectric power in Turkey and Kenya, wind power in South Africa, and solar power in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

With this transformation, Henkel has eliminated around 10,471 tons of CO2 emissions per year from its Scope 2 operations. This reduction is equivalent to removing the carbon footprint of around 2,500 gasoline-powered cars driven for a year or around 2,700 flights from New York to Singapore. Henkel’s move away from fossil fuels has a significant environmental footprint and sets a benchmark for the industry.

“By achieving the full decarbonization of our Scope 2 operations across our MEA locations, we have turned our commitments into tangible progress towards achieving climate-smart operations by 2030,” said Veerabhadra Konakalla, Head of Safety, Health & Environment at Henkel Adhesive Technologies IMEA. “This achievement is a testament to the passion of our IMEA team to drive transformative environmental change and create a more sustainable future.”

This achievement is in line with Henkel’s Sustainability Ambition Framework 2030+, which aims to achieve climate-positive operations by 2030 and a net-zero emissions pathway. Henkel’s sustainability strategy emphasizes “growth with purpose,” focusing on creating greater value for stakeholders, growing the business responsibly and efficiently, and strengthening Henkel’s leadership in sustainability.
