California considers unique security rules for AI companies, but faces pushback from tech companies – LocalNews8.com

Associated Press Press Agency

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California lawmakers are considering a bill that would regulate powerful artificial intelligence systems. It would require AI companies to test their systems and add security measures to ensure they can’t potentially be manipulated to destroy the state’s power grid or help build chemical weapons. The bill’s author says the bill would prevent “catastrophic damage” from extremely powerful AI models that might be created in the future. But Meta and Google say the bill fundamentally misunderstands the industry and would hinder the state’s AI market from growing. The bill would only apply to the largest systems that are still being developed.
