Authorities warn of home-made explosive devices in Worcester

WORCESTER — Two weeks after a homemade device exploded in the middle of Madison Street, officials are warning residents to beware of similar devices in the city.

“As authorities continue to investigate, they encourage the public to be vigilant about unattended items, especially refrigerators,” the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office said in a warning. “Do not attempt to tamper with these items. Instead, call authorities immediately.”

On June 19, police responded to a report of a small explosion in the area of ​​185 Madison St. According to police, officers found a small fire and a can of gasoline and fireworks nearby.

Nearby, Interstate 290 was briefly closed during the incident. Police said no one was injured.

Two other non-detonating devices made of similar materials were recently found in the city. They were found in refrigerators.

The Worcester Police and Fire Departments, State Police and District Attorney’s Office are assisting in the ongoing investigation.
