Union committee considers golf cart regulations

The regulations and requirements for driving golf carts on public roads were discussed at the Union Commission meeting this Monday.

Many neighborhoods in Union have asked for permission to allow golf carts in their neighborhoods. Instead of issuing individual permits to each neighborhood, Mayor Larry Solomon said it would be much easier to regulate golf carts if a blanket ordinance were passed for the entire city.

The city will adopt the current Boone County statute. Bill Mark, a representative of the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, outlined what it would look like once implemented under Kentucky’s Golf Cart Regulation Ordinance.

This only applies to golf carts.

There are a number of restrictions and requirements that golf cart owners must meet to be able to operate their golf carts on city streets, including:

  • An operator’s license is required.
  • Must be insured.
  • Mandatory vehicle inspection by the Sheriff’s Office.
  • You must have your permit and registration sticker clearly visible.
  • The vehicle may not be driven on roads with a speed limit exceeding 35 miles per hour or on state highways.

Violations can result in a fine of up to $250 and towing of the vehicle.

The Union City Commission will introduce a new resolution at its next public meeting in August.
