Public warned to remain vigilant after multiple home-made explosive devices found in Worcester

Authorities are warning the public against Fourth of July celebrations after several homemade explosive devices were found in Worcester.

A small explosion occurred June 19 near 185 Madison St., Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said in a statement.

Investigators found fireworks, a can of butane gas and explosives at the scene, Early said.

Early said two other failed to detonate explosive devices made of similar materials and placed in refrigerators were also found in Worcester last month.

Authorities continue to investigate and urge the public to be cautious with unattended items, especially refrigerators.

Anyone who sees suspicious items “is asked to call 911,” Early said.

“Do not attempt to tamper with these items. Instead, call authorities immediately,” Early said.

State Fire Service Chief Jon Davine warned against manufacturing home-made explosive devices.

“Massachusetts residents have been seriously injured trying to create homemade explosive devices,” Davine said. “These devices are illegal and potentially deadly.”

The Massachusetts State Police Explosives Investigation Unit, Worcester Police and Fire Departments and Early’s office are leading the investigation into the explosive devices.
