DNV to assess turbine power at St.Brieuc wind farm offshore France

Iberdrola Group commissioned DNV to verify the power curve of a wind farm in the Bay of Saint-Brieuc off the coast of north-west France, using nacelle lidar technology.

It is the first large-scale offshore wind project in Brittany, located 16 km from Cap Fréhel in the Bay of St. Brieuc in the Côtes-d’Armor district. Iberdrola subsidiary Ailes Marine reached full operational power from the project’s 62 turbines in May.

According to DNV, the region is known for strong winds and high tides.

The scope of the power curve verification project includes the design, commissioning and performance measurements of three turbines and the installation of equipment to ensure that these measurements meet accreditation standards.

Before deployment, the lidars will be calibrated at DNV’s test facility in Germany to ensure compliance with the updated IEC 61400-50-3:2022 standard, which is intended to enable the use of nacelle-mounted lidars in performance assessments.

The verification process should enable Iberdrola to align actual energy production with initial forecasts, improving the accuracy of the wind farm’s economic models.
