Nexi Enables Bancomat Pay on Amazon’s Italian E-Commerce Site

Customers of Italian online retailer Amazon will be able to make purchases using Bancomat Pay thanks to the retailer’s new partnership with Nexi.

As part of the cooperation between the two companies, Amazon.it will use the Nexi platform to allow customers to make purchases using this additional payment option, Nexi announced in a press release on Tuesday (July 2).

According to the release, Bancomat Pay offers customers a payment option at the checkout that is convenient, simple and secure.

“The agreement with Amazon.it demonstrates once again that Nexi’s international scale and strong local presence make it the ideal choice for global players who need partners with a solid foothold in local markets,” Filippo Signoretti, Merchant Solutions Director at Nexi Italy, said in a press release.

Bancomat Pay is the mobile and online payment solution of the Italian interbank network Bancomat, which operates the national card payment system and many ATMs in the country.

The mobile app allows users to connect their bank accounts and phone numbers and make peer-to-peer payments directly from one account to another.

For merchants looking to accept electronic payments, Bancomat Pay offers a cheaper alternative to cards.

PYMNTS Intelligence found at the end of 2022 that 42.2% of Italians reported using a mobile wallet to pay for their last online purchase. That percentage was the second highest after Germany, where 44.2% of respondents used one for their last eCommerce transaction.

Moreover, according to the report “How the World Does Digital: Different Paths to Digital Transformation”, 20.4% of Italian consumers said they had paid for their last in-store purchase using a mobile wallet.

In another recent product launch in May, Nexi announced that it now allows merchants in Italy to process payments using their iPhones. The company already offered this option to business owners for Android operating systems via the NexiSoftPOS app

In March, Nexi selected Mastercard to power its open bank account payments across Europe. The partnership will make it easier to make e-commerce payments through Nexi’s payment gateways, serving merchants across the continent.

“Mastercard and Nexi will build an integrated digital payments ecosystem together, developing solutions based on Mastercard Open Banking that offer secure and seamless payments, giving customers more choice when shopping online,” the companies said in a press release announcing their partnership.
