Ontario dentist charged with malpractice for allegedly installing unapproved devices

National Post recently reported the case of Dr. Hisham Kaloti, an Ontario dentist who was accused of medical malpractice and assault by installing unapproved equipment in a patient’s mouth.

Multiple lawsuits have been filed on behalf of former patients who have experienced complications since receiving veneers and crowns. The devices were ordered from “Foo Tian Dental Laboratory,” an unregistered lab in China. They were allegedly installed without the patient’s knowledge or consent, a requirement under the Health Care Consent Act (HCCA) in Ontario.

There would be a price difference between unapproved devices and those approved by Health Canada, which could result in a purported profit for Kaloti.

The law firm representing Kaloti’s former patients is seeking damages for “alleged assault, negligence and breach of fiduciary duty, as well as punitive and aggravated damages.”
