Warning Issued After Improvised Explosives Found – Lowell Sun

WORCESTER — The public is urged to be vigilant and notify authorities if they see unattended refrigerators or other suspicious items following the recent discovery of three homemade explosive devices in Worcester.

The State Police Fire and Explosives Investigation Unit, the Worcester Police Department, the Worcester Fire Department and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the explosive devices.

On June 19, a small explosion occurred near 185 Madison St., where the Kelley Square Gulf gas station is located. Investigators found fireworks, a can of butane and projectiles at the scene.

Two other undetonated explosive devices made of similar materials and placed in refrigerators were also found in the city last month.

As authorities continue to investigate, they are urging the public to be vigilant about unattended items, especially refrigerators. Do not attempt to tamper with these items. Instead, call authorities immediately.

Anyone who sees suspicious items is asked to call 911.

“Massachusetts residents have been seriously injured while attempting to create homemade explosive devices,” said State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine. “These devices are illegal and potentially deadly.”
