Islamabad: The US government underscored its continued support for the development of agriculture in Pakistan by visiting the Centre of Excellence for Olive Research and Training at the Barani Agricultural Research Institute and the Ghulam Rasul Farm.

During a day trip to Chakwal, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Mission Director Kate Somvongsiri and U.S. Consul General in Lahore Kristin Hawkins highlighted the long-standing U.S.-Pakistan cooperation in the agriculture and dairy sectors in Punjab.

During her visit to Ghulam Rasul Farm, USAID Mission Director Kate Somvongsiri toured a milk pasteurization facility established with USAID support. “Pakistan ranks among the world’s top five milk-producing countries, with the fourth largest livestock herd in the world. Integrating technology and adding value to dairy farming is key to increasing productivity and sustainability,” said the USAID Mission Director. “This farm is just one example of a U.S.-Pakistan partnership that aims to improve dairy productivity and increase farmer incomes through training and fostering connections with microfinance institutions and farmer associations.”

The farm’s pasteurization unit demonstrates how innovative business ideas and effective implementation can ensure sustainable development. With support from a USAID project that ended in 2021, the farm continues to grow, producing additional products and underscoring the long-term impact of USAID’s work.

At the Center of Excellence for Olive Research and Training (CEFORT) at the Barani Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), U.S. Consul General Kristin Hawkins and USAID Mission Director Somvongsiri explored the potential of olive production in Chakwal. “It is encouraging to see BARI’s continued efforts to promote olive cultivation after USAID’s assistance in establishing CEFORT and developing the olive sector in Punjab,” said Consul General Hawkins. The U.S. diplomats also met with Chakwal Deputy Commissioner Qurat-ul-Ain Malik, thanking her for hosting the delegation and making their first trip to Chakwal a success.

These visits reaffirm the U.S. government’s commitment to supporting economic growth and sustainable development in Pakistan’s agricultural sector. The United States remains committed to supporting partnerships that drive sustainable development and economic prosperity for the people of Pakistan.
