Google: Here’s how to factory reset your Pixel 6 without bricking it

According to a new Google support document, the company admits that there are “bricking” issues when performing a factory reset on the Pixel 6 series, and there is a workaround to avoid it. This affects Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, and Pixel 6a devices, with Android 14 being the primary issue.

Google attributes the latest system update as the cause of the problem. Despite questioning the necessity of factory resetting the device, Google still offers a recommended method to avoid these errors.

First, users who have already updated to the latest version of Android 14 only need to leave their device on and idle for 15 minutes. This happens after a reboot while the installer does its job of updating the device.

Google then recommends performing a factory reset on Pixel 6 series devices before updating to the latest system build to avoid the error.

Google is working on a fix for Pixel 6 factory reset issue

For now, Google is asking for feedback on its recommendations if users encounter any issues after implementing them.

With that in mind, Google has promised that a fix will be coming soon that will eliminate the need to use these methods to safely factory reset Pixel 6 devices.

Google and its Pixel smartphone line

The latest in Google’s renowned Pixel smartphone lineup is already setting its sights on the next device, with the company holding its upcoming event almost two months earlier than expected. As July rolled around, Google confirmed that its Pixel 9 launch would take place by August 13, showcasing its latest smartphone development to the world.

Among the new features coming to most Pixel devices is Gemini Nano, Google’s latest multi-modal AI model created for smartphones. With Gemini Nano, Pixel 8 and other eligible devices can now take advantage of the generative AI features available on the new model, which also offers essential features for apps like Photos, Google Workspace, and more.

While Google may be focusing on the new horizon with these latest features and experiences, that doesn’t mean that old devices can’t access them. The Pixel 6 hasn’t fallen behind yet, but it currently has issues with factory resets, leading to bricking. Google advises not to update it yet, or at least do so after a certain amount of time.
