Homemade explosives found in fridges in Worcester; public warned to be vigilant

Worcester authorities are asking residents to be on the lookout for potential homemade explosive devices and other suspicious items. The devices could be hidden in refrigerators, they said.

The warning was issued after police responded to a call about a small explosion and found other, undetonated explosive devices.

The explosion occurred June 19 near 185 Madison St. in Worcester, according to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early’s office. Investigators found fireworks, a can of butane gas and “projectile materials” at the scene.

Two undetonated explosive devices were found near Worcester last month, officials said. They did not specify where. The devices were made of similar materials to those found at the blast site and were placed in refrigerators.

The investigation is ongoing and residents should be cautious of unattended items, especially refrigerators. They should not be tampered with and if you find any suspicious items, call 911 immediately.

“Massachusetts residents have been seriously injured while attempting to create homemade explosive devices,” Fire Marshal Jon Davine said in a statement. “These devices are illegal and potentially deadly.”
