QCFMD: Be careful when using fireworks this Fourth of July

Legal consumer fireworks are permitted on private property from June 24 to July 6 and include ground-based and hand-held sparking devices; any device that goes airborne and explodes/detonates or flies above ground is illegal. Persons who ignite or light legal consumer fireworks are liable and responsible for the costs of any required emergency response.

With the Fourth of July holiday approaching, it’s important to know what types of fireworks are legal in Queen Creek, when you can use them, how to use them safely, and how to behave in a QC neighborhood setting.

Legal fireworks include ground-based and portable spark-based devices; any airborne devices that explode/detonate or fly above the ground are illegal (e.g., rockets, refillable cartridge devices, aircraft cartridges, and single-barrel devices fired into the air).

State laws determine when consumer fireworks can be legally sold and used. The use of legal fireworks is prohibited from June 24 to July 6. It is prohibited to use illegal fireworks within the city limits.

Legal consumer fireworks are permitted only on private property, and persons who use, discharge or ignite legal consumer fireworks are responsible for the expenses associated with responding to emergencies.

To reduce the risks associated with fireworks, the Queen Creek Fire and Medical Department recommends following these safety tips:

  • Adults should always supervise fireworks activities. Sparklers burn at about 2,000 degrees and can cause serious injury.
  • Avoid purchasing fireworks in brown paper packaging.
  • Never hold any part of your body directly over a firework device while lighting the fuse. Move away to a safe distance immediately after lighting.
  • Never attempt to relight or retrieve fireworks that have not fully exploded.
  • Never point fireworks at or throw them at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water and a garden hose handy in case of a fire or other accident.
  • Light off fireworks one at a time and retreat quickly.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket or light them in metal or glass containers.
  • Once the fireworks have finished burning, pour a bucket of water over them and leave them overnight, then throw them in the trash to prevent a garbage fire.
  • Only use legal, consumer fireworks, and always leave fireworks that go into the air (which is illegal for consumer use) to professionals.

Fireworks can also pose a risk to pets and livestock. The following safety tips are recommended:

  • Don’t take your pet to fireworks shows.
  • Provide a safe space, away from loud noises.
  • Do not place light sticks or jewelry on your pet.
  • Please ensure your pet is properly identified with a microchip and/or ID tag.
  • Never set off fireworks near your pets or livestock, and be cautious around your neighbors’ pets and livestock.

Remember that fireworks are dangerous when celebrating and it is important to maintain good manners when dealing with neighbors.
