US approves new offshore wind project, increasing total capacity to 13 GW

The U.S. Department of the Interior approved another offshore wind project Tuesday, bringing the total approved offshore wind capacity to more than 13 gigawatts (GW).

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris gave the green light to the ninth bill on Tuesday, the Interior Department said.

“The Biden-Harris Administration is building momentum every day toward a clean energy future. Today’s milestone is another step toward our ambitious goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore power by 2030,” said Secretary of the Interior Deb Haaland.

The new offshore wind farm is the Atlantic Shores South Wind project, which consists of two offshore wind farms – 1 and 2 – and associated export cables that are expected to generate up to 2,800 megawatts of electricity, enough to power nearly one million homes with renewable energy.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) off the coast of New Jersey has approved the construction of up to 195 wind turbines for an offshore wind farm.
