MasterChef’s Theo Michaels shares three kitchen gadgets that will give your home kitchen a professional touch

If you’re a long-time MasterChef viewer, you’ll be familiar with chef Theo Michaels. The BBC One semi-finalist, presenter, author and previous MasterChef 2014 contestant has been a regular on our screens for years, and also spent two years as resident chef on Channel 4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch, so if we were to ask anyone for cooking advice, it’s him.

Now, as Theo launches his new book Cypriana (order it for £17.15 here from Amazon) with flavour-packed recipes that offer amateur cooks an authentic taste of Greece and Cyprus, the TV star, who also appears regularly on This Morning, catches up with APPROX! to talk about the gadgets he believes every home kitchen should have to turn ordinary meals into MasterChef meals – and make cooking easier than ever.

Here’s what he recommends investing in for those looking to improve their home cooking…

Kenwood MultiPro Go

“I love this set; it’s a mini food processor that I often use to grate and slice salads and slaws. But now that summer is (finally) here, I’m switching to the blade attachment to whip up any number of salsas, sauces, and marinades that I love to use when grilling,” Theo tells us. “It’s small enough to fit in a cupboard without taking up too much space, it’s dishwasher safe (I hate washing up!), and it’s so good I bought one for my mom too! QVC often has great deals on this stuff!”

Carbon steel frying pan

“Carbon steel pans are my choice,” says Theo(Photo: Samuel Groves)

“I value beauty and functionality in my home kitchen. Carbon steel pans are my go-to, you can use metal utensils, no weird chemicals, just solid, durable pans with amazing heat retention and browning capabilities,” says Theo. “You can go from cooking on the stove to baking in the oven and then over an open flame (which we do a lot!). They become naturally nonstick when seasoned (or you can buy pre-seasoned).

“I love things that last a lifetime; from my frying pans to a few classic old T-shirts! Samuel Groves and Alex Pole are British manufacturers with a great tradition in cookware.”

Good knives

“It’s a cliché, but a good knife will last a lifetime if you look after it, and it’s an incredibly personal thing for a chef; it becomes an extension of yourself. I would always recommend spending as much as you can on a good chef’s knife. But find a shop, hold them, touch them until you find one that ‘clicks’ – then buy it and cherish it!” Theo explains.

“I have two knives from Savernake, a British knife manufacturer with a long tradition of making knives that will last a lifetime.”
