UP govt tightens rules after Hathras stampede tragedy

Following the tragic Hathras stampede that led to the death of 121 people, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Asim Arun on Wednesday said the state government is working on new Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for large gatherings to prevent such incidents in future.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has directed officials to draw up detailed SOPs to ensure that permissions for events are granted only if “basic, minimum” amenities are met. This includes needs such as sufficient toilets, water tankers and evacuation points for the crowd.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, a three-ministerial committee, including Arun, was tasked with overseeing relief measures. The chief minister visited Hathras, met the injured and the families of the deceased and ordered an inquiry led by a retired high court judge. An FIR was also filed against the event organisers for their negligence, including inadequate parking facilities and inadequate entry and exit roads.
