Skimming device found in Fairfield gas station ATM

Sergeant Michael Stahl of the Fairfield Police Department said the device was found Monday, July 1, at the Mobil gas station at 1271 Stratfield Road.

Stahl said the device was discovered by an ATM repair technician, but it was not known when it was placed there.

Steps to protect yourself:

  • Check your bank statements: If you used this ATM, check your bank statements for unauthorized withdrawals.
  • Notify your bank: If you notice suspicious activity, consider contacting your bank to get a new card.

Tips for recognizing skimming devices at ATMs:

  • Check the card reader: Check the card reader for loose, large, or misaligned parts. If it looks different than other ATMs, it may have been tampered with.
  • Inspect the keyboard: Check to see if the keyboard is thicker than usual or if it is a counterfeit overlay.
  • Cover your PIN: Always cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN in case there is a hidden camera.
  • Wiggle everything: Wiggle the card reader and keyboard to see if they are loose or detachable.

Stay vigilant and report any suspicious ATMs or devices to Fairfield Police.

To report suspicious activity, contact the department at 203-254-4800.
