Senator Sonny Angara talks about calls for teachers’ pay raise

SONNY ANGARA – The incoming DepEd Secretary expressed full support for the efforts to increase teachers’ salaries.

Vice President Duterte did not disclose the reason for her resignation as DepEd Secretary. The public was even more surprised when she announced that 3 Dutertes would run for senator in 2025.

Senator Sonny Angara has been appointed by the Palace as the new secretary of the Department of Education. He recently spoke out about the pressure to increase teachers’ salaries in the country.

Based on a recent report by GMA News, Senator Sonny Angara expressed his support for the call to increase teachers’ salaries. According to him, he knows that inspiring teachers can affect the quality of education in the country.

“You attract the best, brightest and brightest you know” he said.

Regarding the proposal to raise the starting salary of public school teachers in the Philippines to PHP 50,000, the senator and the incoming secretary of the Ministry of Education assured that they will study it.

Angara explained that it is Congress that sets the salary level when there is a salary increase for government employees. According to the senator, he will examine the call for an increase in the starting salary of teachers in cooperation with the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and the Department of Finance (DOF).

In addition to pushing for a pay raise for teachers, Senator Sonny Angara also supports a proposal to ban gadgets in the Philippines based on the report, emphasizing that it is better for students not to be distracted in the classroom.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has filed Senate Bill 2706, the proposed Gadget-Free Schools Act, which prohibits teachers and students from kindergarten through high school in public schools in the country from using gadgets during classes.
