Workshop explores AfCFTA digital protocol and its impact on e-commerce – ENA English

Addis Ababa, 3 July 2024 (ENA) – A workshop was held today in Addis Ababa to explore the intricacies of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Digital Trade Protocol and its impact on e-commerce in Africa.

The workshop on the Annexes to the Protocol on Digital Trade and E-Commerce took place in the context of the recently adopted AfCFTA Digital Protocol at the 37th Summit of Heads of State of the African Union in February 2024.


In his opening speech, Minister of State for Innovation and Technology Yishrun Alemayehu highlighted the key role of the workshop in promoting knowledge exchange, collaboration and strategic discussions.

He added that the ministry is committed to supporting the ICT sector benefiting from the AfCFTA by creating an enabling environment.

According to him, the workshops were to become a platform for knowledge exchange, cooperation and strategic dialogue.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about strategies to support the development of the online market environment and facilitate seamless cross-border transactions.

The project was also expected to go beyond the AfCFTA digital protocol by delving into the complexities of domestic and cross-border e-commerce in Africa,

Yishrun stressed the need for action, calling on participants to engage in open dialogue, share knowledge and contribute to this crucial endeavour.

By harnessing the potential of e-commerce, African countries can increase economic prosperity and create a more inclusive future for all.
