People who rely on powered medical devices should plan ahead as HECO’s plan goes into effect

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – State officials are urging people who use electrical or battery-powered medical devices to prepare for HECO’s wildfire season shutoff program.

As part of the program, HECO will turn off power in areas where extreme weather conditions occur and the risk of fire is high.

The state Department of Health said residents should prepare for the risk of multi-day power outages.

“Last line of defence”: HECO launches power cut-off programme in case of forest fire threat

“For households where someone is dependent on electricity for medical reasons, it is advisable to discuss power cut planning with your doctor,” the Department of Health said.

“Additionally, you should review and update your family’s power outage plan, including possible temporary relocation from the outage area if there are insufficient backup power options.”
