WVU to Develop At-Home Apnea Detection Device

Researchers at West Virginia University (WVU), supported by a grant from the US National Science Foundation, are developing a home device to detect sleep apnea.

The device uses artificial intelligence to analyze data collected through a smartphone or tablet app. The prototypes are similar to a watch or pulse oximeter and can indicate the severity of sleep apnea and suggest whether patients need treatment or lifestyle changes. Using the device would replace lengthy, 24-hour assessments at sleep centers.

The study is a continuation of a five-year study conducted at WVU Medicine JW Ruby Memorial Hospital to screen hospitalized patients for sleep apnea.
