US transmission policy in the first half of 2024 focused on stimulating new lines and optimizing existing infrastructure

Difficulties in building new transmission facilities continue to impact the U.S. transition to clean energy.

FERC issued a major rule in May that analysts say will spur new transmission. But with the U.S. Supreme Court’s June 28 ruling invalidating the Chevron Doctrine, there’s also uncertainty about the rule’s future.

At the same time, increasing attention is being paid to improving the efficiency of the national transmission network using dynamic line load indicators and other technologies that improve network operation.

Additionally, DOE and FERC took action to update transmission permitting regulations, and grid operators across the country evaluated multibillion-dollar transmission plans.
